Extend an e-bike cable
A cable that is too short is one of the most common problems with e-bike frame replacements, conversions and repairs. This page explains when and how e-bike cables can be extended – and which solutions are available to order directly.
When is an e-bike cable too short?
A cable that is too short almost always results from a change to the e-bike – not from a defect. The most common causes:
Frame replacement
A new frame has different cable routing and distances. Existing cables for the motor, display or battery often no longer reach the target connection.
Conversion kit
When retrofitting an e-bike motor (e.g. Bafang BBS02) into an existing bicycle, the supplied cable lengths do not always suit the frame geometry.
Cargo bike
Cargo bikes and freight bicycles have significantly longer frames than standard bikes. Standard cables from the manufacturer are often insufficient for these lengths.
Three ways to extend an e-bike cable
Depending on the situation, there are different approaches. The cleanest and most reliable solution is a ready-made extension cable with genuine HIGO connectors.
Extension cable (recommended)
A ready-made extension cable with two matching HIGO connectors is plugged between the existing cable and the target connection. No soldering, no tools, waterproof from the factory.
Self-assembly
With a soldering iron, wire stripper and heat shrink tubing, a cable can be extended yourself. Requires experience and careful functional testing with a multimeter.
Custom assembly
For very long cables over 2,000 mm, multi-pin connections with 6 or more conductors, or series production, a ready-made custom assembly from ETshop is recommended.
HIGO extension cables – types and lengths

The length of the extension cable is the total length from connector to connector. Measure the cable run along the frame – not in a straight line. Allow approx. 10–15% extra for bends and curves.
Which extension cable fits my e-bike?
HIGO extension cables fit all e-bikes that use HIGO connectors. This applies to the majority of modern e-bikes with Chinese drive systems.
Bafang motors
All Bafang BBS motors use HIGO Mini-B as the OEM standard. Extension cables fit directly without adapters.
Chinese OEM drives
Most Chinese e-bike manufacturers use HIGO connectors as the OEM standard – from entry-level motors to high-quality systems.

FAQ – E-bike cable extension
The easiest method is a ready-made extension cable with matching HIGO connectors – simply plug it between the existing cable and the target connection, no soldering required. Alternatively, a cable can be extended by soldering, which requires experience and a subsequent functional test with a multimeter.
Bafang BBS01, BBS02 and BBSHD use HIGO Mini-B connectors. HIGO Mini-B extension cables from ETshop fit directly without adapters. The correct pin count is important: 5-pin for the display, 3-pin for the throttle, 2-pin for brake sensors.
Standard extension cables (2 × cable) are available up to 2,000 mm. Special Type 2 with panel-mount connectors at both ends is available up to 10,000 mm (10 metres) – ideal for cargo bikes. All lengths are made to order.
Yes – HIGO extension cables are assembled with genuine HIGO connectors and achieve the same protection rating (IP44–IP67) as the original cables. For self-soldered extensions, the solder joint must be additionally sealed with heat shrink tubing and optionally potting compound.
The key points: (1) Identify the connector series and pin count of the existing cable before ordering. (2) Measure the length along the frame, not in a straight line – allow approx. 10% extra for bends. (3) Always test for continuity and absence of short circuits with a multimeter before installing the cable.
